1 dead, 1 critically hurt in Route 122A crash, police say

  • RUTLAND — A 42-year-old man died and a 78-year-old man suffered life-threatening injuries after a head-on crash on Main Street late Monday afternoon, according to Rutland police.

    The collision, reported near the Holden town line on Route 122A, closed the roadway for several hours. Police said a preliminary investigation indicates a Toyota Tacoma crossed the centerline and struck an oncoming Mercedes-Benz sedan head-on.

    The driver of the Tacoma, a man from Maynard, was taken to a hospital, where he later died from his injuries, police said. The Mercedes driver from Rutland was also transported to a hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries. There were no passengers in either vehicle.

    The section of Main Street reopened around 8:45 p.m.

    Rutland police, with assistance from the CEMLEC Accident Reconstruction Unit, are investigating the cause of the crash. The names of the drivers were not released Monday night.
